Road to Kampala - Empowering small-scale farmers and SMEs
As Africa moves into another 10-year phase of the continent’s agriculture and food security transformation framework, i.e. the CAADP3 – Kampala, one issue of primary attention is “implementation and delivering results”. This focus arises from the expressed desire to build on gains and experiences of the last two decades of CAADP (i.e. CAADP-Maputo and CAADP-Malabo) while also adapting to emerging trends including the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, demographics shifts, conflicts, climate disruptions and technology advancement.
Along more intentional drive on agrifood systems transformation approaches, CAADP3 expects to also put a spotlight on need for bold and direct interventions on issues of implementation capacity including multi-sectoral governance and coordination and inter-organisational collaboration for expanded and effective delivery on set CAADP3 targets and commitments. In this light, inclusivity, in terms of players/actors and stakeholders playing their part in the agrifood systems transformation is critical. At the global level, recent processes including the UN Food Systems Summit (2021) explicitly call attention to issues of inclusiveness and role of small-scale farmers and SMEs.
One such constituency, whose role directly impacts the quality of production–productivity, as well as directly connecting with key social-livelihood-health and environment-climate ambitions, is the small-scale farmers and SMEs. This is a uniquely African factor with the over 33 million smallholder farming units (IFAD, 2023), commanding over 80% of Africa’s farmland (FAO) and producing over 70% of Africa’s food (IFAD, 22023), small-scale farmers have the power to significantly change the course on the continent’s agrifood systems transformation trajectories.
In leading up to the AU Kampala extraordinary summit on CAADP, this “Road to Kampala” webinar is organised to continue emphasising the importance of empowering small-scale farmers and smallholder businesses to accelerate CAADP implementation. Empowerment, whether technology, financial, knowledge access and skills, or market access, is by no means a favour but a critical success factor for transforming agrifood systems with clear impacts across the AU Agenda 2063 goals and the SDGs.
This fourth and last webinar will take place on Thursday 23 January 2025 at 2:00 pm CET / 4:00 pm EAT / 8:00 am EST. Interpretation will be available from English to French.
The partners supporting the organisation of this webinar are the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, the PanAfrican Farmers Organization (PAFO), the Shamba Centre for Food & Climate, SDG2 Advocacy Hub and the Consortium of African Youth in Agriculture and Climate Change (CAYACC).
